Mainstreaming both the genders is pivotal to the development of society
LAHORE: The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) chapter recently condemned the K-P government’s announcement to introduce co-education in 767 schools across the province with around 4,000 female teachers being appointed for the purpose. The party has asked its supporters to reject the decision of the PTI government, describing it un-Islamic and a foreign agenda. Beyond the usual political opposition, the JUI-F’s demands show the patriarchal structure of the society, which despite women having played the roles of teachers and mentors throughout Islamic history, sees it as against the teachings of Islam even at the primary level of education. Mainstreaming both the genders is pivotal to the development of society and eradication of strict gender roles. Religious parties must turn their attention towards curbing incidents of child molestation, rape, and other social and economic ills.
