Census results

Letter November 04, 2017
The elections can only be held on time if the delimitation of constituencies is given utmost priority

KARACHI: A few days after the census 2017 results were released, political parties in Sindh, particularly the MQM and the PPP, expressed their concerns over the procedural discrepancies and refused to accept the results. The said parties are adamant about their concerns being addressed. However, the procedure to do so is no easy task and in the worst case scenario is resultantly to delay the general elections scheduled for 2018. Loopholes in the consensus exercise would have likely affected the entire country and all the provinces where census has been conducted and not just the Sindh province. The elections can only be held on time if the delimitation of constituencies is given utmost priority. However, with issues being raised over census results, both delimitation and the general elections are likely to face a delay.

While the claims made by legislators in Sindh cannot be completely refuted, fixing the discrepancies from the scratch would be equally irrational and a tedious task.
