KARACHI: Recently, the balcony of a flat collapsed in the Lyari area of Karachi, killing a young girl and injuring four other children playing on the footpath below the balcony. The residential building has commercial shops on its ground floor. The accident happened because of the dilapidated state of the building, where people are still living. There are numerous such buildings in the old city area of Karachi, crammed with residents and commercial shops. Hence, people living in these areas are at the risk of life-threatening hazards. In spite of the notices sent from the court and the departments concerned, the KMC’s department concerned has failed to not only demolish the buildings but to even get them vacated. Due to the absence of strict laws, commercial units of all sorts, from shopping centres to auto repair shops, are being opened in the ground floor of these buildings, increasing the risk of casualties in case of any unfortunate events.
