Prevalence of harassment

Letter October 30, 2017
Regardless of the debate over the definition of harassment and professional and ethical boundaries to be maintained

LAHORE:  The issue of Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s sister being sent a friend request by a doctor from a renowned hospital in Karachi has taken many unusual turns from what was a Twitter spat initially. Regardless of the debate over the definition of harassment and professional and ethical boundaries to be maintained between a doctor and a patient, the Oscar winner tweeted “there are zero boundaries in Pakistan,” making harassment and overstepping the boundaries sound like an issue of the Pakistani society only. Despite the strict laws and regulations, harassment is prevalent and a common occurrence more than one can imagine.

So the very statement implying absence of such limitations in ‘Pakistan’ makes the country stand out as the only one with such issues. The point should have been to raise the absence of laws and their effective implementation in work settings ‘across the world’ and not how such cases are exclusive to Pakistan.
