Considering the state of prisons in the country, the crime rate is least likely to be controlled or reduced
QUETTA: On October 26 the issue of juveniles facing abuse at the hands of senior prisoners and the authorities was discussed in the Balochistan Assembly. MPA Yasmin Lehri stated that juvenile prisoners are forced to use drugs and are sexually abused to the extent where they end up becoming drug addicts by the time they complete their sentence in jail. It is another disappointing aspect of the prisons and the criminal procedure in Pakistan, where one is highly vulnerable to becoming a criminal or contracting HIV and suchlike. Why aren’t there separate prison facilities for juvenile prisoners is the question the provincial government must answer. Further, as jail facilities are referred to as ‘correctional centres’ in many countries, it is for the purpose of moral correction. Considering the state of prisons in the province and also in the country, the crime rate is least likely to be controlled or reduced.
