Strengthening democracy

Letter October 27, 2017
Politicians keep changing parties for selfish gains

KARACHI: Politicians keep changing parties for selfish gains. Often the most polished and learned politicians are seen leaving the party that paddled their political career for the one which might lack a mandate, but still has chances of securing enough votes in future polls.

Recently, PML-N member Sardar Zulfikar Khosa threw open the possibility of joining the PPP on party head Asif Ali Zardari’s invitation. The estranged party leader announced the possible move on the pretext of the PML-N failing to do anything substantial and delivering to the public in the past five years.

However, this only raises the question of what the PPP has done in its five-year tenure in the federal government and 10 years at the head of the Sindh provincial government. Corruption scandals, major diplomatic failures like Memogate and crumbling infrastructure across the province, taints the PPP’s image. The former governor reciprocated the confidence that Zardari has shown in him. But whether he reciprocates the same confidence in the PPP shall remain unanswered as past actions are likely overshadowed by future possibilities in politics.
