KARACHI: The Karachi Biennale art exhibition was inaugurated for the public on October 22nd. Artwork covering a range of creative exhibit was displayed at the century old NJV government school. The event also included addresses and discussion from renowned local and foreign artists along with two art prizes. Considering the scale of the event, the Karachi Biennale is one of its kind, as previously art exhibitions hosted by private art galleries and foreign cultural centres have mostly attracted and catered to the artistic knack of a certain niche.

Not just art, poetry and literary work too was part of the event, based on the theme of ‘witness’, with regard to its importance to the political and social realms. Art is a much celebrated medium to express one’s opinions and thoughts in a varied manner and biennales are commonly organised across the world. However, this is for the first time such an event is taking place in Karachi city, hence for such initiatives to continue, support from the government is rather an imperative.
