Left to die

Letter October 20, 2017
Doctor's apathy criticised

LAHORE: During the past few days, two incidents occurred where doctors failed to treat patients. These incidents were reported in the media. One patient died because of the ongoing strike at PIMS hospital Islamabad and a woman gave birth to a child on a footpath outside a hospital in Raiwind due to unavailability of doctors during the early morning hours. Both the incidents took place at government hospitals. It is shocking to know that the ones chosen to serve the ailing humanity regardless of the severity of their own circumstances leave the suffering humanity high and dry. As doctors resorting to strike to get their demands accepted has become a routine occurrence, cases of patients dying after being refused treatment are ever on the rise. Yet, over the years the Punjab government has failed to deal with doctors’ association which chooses to close the emergency department and OPDs to pressure the government into accepting their demands.
