RAWALPINDI: What makes a group of people a party or a faction is their mutual consensus on major issues, that is, a common approach as to how matters should be dealt with. Yet during the past few days, all that has come out of the PML-N is rather chaotic disagreement reflected through the statements of its leaders.
Recently, Captain Safdar’s rant against the Ahmadis, which later was refuted by Rana Sanaullah and Punjab CM Shehbaz Sharif. Further, the younger brother of the ousted prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, being wary of his confrontational approach towards the judiciary distanced himself from the tussle between the two. Another similar problem emerged with the DG ISPR giving a statement on the poor state of economy, which was not welcomed by Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal with the reason that military personnel should refrain from commenting on economic affairs. Now the last contradiction on the same issue is the PM’s statement that says that the army chief has every right to comment on matters of national interest.
The statements and the counterstatements appear to show the deep fissures within our society. It is a sad reflection on how we conduct ourselves before the world. Let us work to change that immediately.
