Illusion of development

Letter October 14, 2017
The government has issued its rebuttal to the IPR report that highlights the sorry state of Pakistan’s economy

LAHORE: Even though the government has issued its rebuttal to the IPR report that highlights the sorry state of Pakistan’s economy, the basic economic indicators comprehensible to a layman tell no different story. In spite of the fact that the exports of services showed a growth, the overall current account is still in a deficit. There has also been a rise of 32% in the debt amount every Pakistani owes since the year 2013. The government, however, keeps harping on the same tune of economic development and growth through CPEC. However, the pros and cons of the project will only be unfolded with the passage of time. As the economy nears the brink of an economic disaster, the ruling party covertly continues to support its finance mastermind. This simply reinforces the fact that the clarifications by the government are merely paradoxical statements having little to do with the reality.
