Domestic violence and police force

Recently, an 18-year-old girl was killed in Hyderabad by her in-laws

HYDERABAD: Recently, an 18-year-old girl was killed in Hyderabad by her in-laws. According to the girl’s father, she was subjected to abusive and violent treatment every other day and after being killed her body was secretly buried. This is not the first time such a case has surfaced, where a female has been beaten to death by her own family. Yet the issue remains unresolved as the police, more often than not, are bribed to side with the powerful and then threaten the victim’s family to withdraw their case.

Quite often, the case fails to even make it to the court. Further, owing to their proximity of being in far-flung areas, the incidents often fail to catch media’s or NGOs’ attention. Hence, not just the media or an NGO, the local government bodies too seem equally helpless in dealing with such cases. However, to improve the situation the police should also be kept in check.
