The ESED has launched a literacy programme in the Mardan prison
HYDERABAD: Though most people say we should not be sympathetic to prisoners calling them to have deserved a life full of miseries for their follies, we often forget they too are humans with a right to better their future. They have served their time and are deserving of a chance to make amends. And the Elementary and Secondary Education Department (ESED) of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) is all set to provide them with just that chance. The ESED has launched a literacy programme in the Mardan prison, which seeks to rehabilitate inmates into the mainstream when they are out of jail so that they can increase their chances of getting employed.
A total of 22 females and 46 males have been enrolled in basic classes that will teach them Urdu, English and Mathematics. Even though no teachers have been hired yet, inmates already well-versed in these subjects are conducting classes for Rs15,000. This provides prisoners a great opportunity to earn while serving their time in jail. The K-P government should be applauded for implementing this and other provincial governments should also follow suit.
