Holier than thou

Letter April 18, 2011
We have all, at some point in time, indulged in this kind of behaviour, most of us do not see it as unfair or corrupt.

LONDON: This is with reference to Ayesha Siddiqa’s article of April 17 titled “The narrative of the middle class – I”. I agree with the writer. While traditional forms of inherited wealth, landholdings and so on are favourite whipping boys of armchair critics, no one has any qualms in getting jobs or jumping the queue after using their connections and contacts. We have all, at some point in time, indulged in this kind of behaviour and most of us do not see it as unfair or corrupt.

Just the other day at the departure lounge at Islamabad’s Benazir Bhutto International Airport, three young representatives of our middle class were discussing how feudalism has destroyed this country and that the corrupt government must be removed. However, they were all saying this as they smoked next to a giant “No smoking please” sign.
