Benazir murder case

Letter September 24, 2017
Musharraf’s role in a tragedy that changed the political fate of many cannot be overlooked

RAWALPINDI: Former president and army head Pervez Musharraf recently made some startling revelations about the Benazir Bhutto’s murder case. The retired army chief has not been given a clean chit and is yet to face the court about his involvement in the murder of the PPP party head in 2007. Regardless of the court’s verdict, the questions raised by Musharraf are extremely important and the pursuing investigations of the case must address them. The role of the internal party heads in the assassination of the former prime minister needs probing.

The ATC verdict in the assassination case sentenced two police officers to 17 years’ imprisonment, while setting free the five militants of a banned militant group on the basis of a lack of evidence. As the investigations seem hollow and abrupt, Musharraf’s allegations should be included and addressed in the ongoing investigations to cover all the underlying possible aspects. Musharraf’s role in a tragedy that changed the political fate of many cannot be overlooked; however, being in power as president for five years Asif Ali Zardari and his party too, didn’t do much to hunt down Benazir’s murderers.
