The most stressful city

Letter September 15, 2017
If we think the world doesn’t recognise Karachi then we are completely wrong

KARACHI: If we think the world doesn’t recognise Karachi then we are completely wrong. The metropolis hosting a population of about 15 million people has been listed in the top most dangerous cities of the world and the top dirtiest. Adding another feather to its hat, a recent study reported by the CNN has recognised it as the 8th most stressful cities to live in. And any Karachiite would certainly agree.

Karachi has an increasing traffic level, holding up traffic for hours on some days, less percentage of green spaces, poor and ineffective public transport system, an increasing number of middle class with an increasing debt level and poor financial status, and falling physical and mental health status — all factors that have been categorised in the study.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the city and running from one end to another to earn a living, most Karachiites are unable to pause and just live for a second, resulting in growing stress levels. And if current trends retain, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Karachi moves up to the No 1 spot currently held by Baghdad in the next few years.
