Lost American dream

Letter September 09, 2017
Trump’s policy of ‘America First’ has emerged as one that is ‘isolationist'

ISLAMABAD: The notion of the ‘American Dream’ is certainly, if not the only, one of the many incentives attracting people from misery-stricken lands to migrate to the US. It is the very idea of equality of opportunities that makes upward social mobility appear relatively easier. This is possibly one of the reasons why illegally undocumented immigrant children, whose parents migrated for a number of reasons, are called ‘dreamers’ under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

The right to dream and achieve might have been extended to expat children by the rule of law, but practically it remains shackled by racial supremacy. The long-term consequences of the reversal of DACA will probably take longer to unfold for the US, while for many ‘dreamers’ a way of life shall shatter.

Trump’s policy of ‘America First’ has emerged as one that is ‘isolationist’. The repeal of the DACA programme might deprive the American economy of some long-run economic benefits. As Indians, followed by Pakistanis make up for the highest number of beneficiaries of the programme, sending back this educated pool of South Asians shall become an investment that America would risk losing.

The US should regulate a workable solution for the undocumented immigrants rather than deporting them.
