Zulfikar Ali Bhutto case (II)

Letter April 14, 2011
Since the judiciary is already independent, not properly pleading the case will prove fatal.

KARACHI: The dramatic resignation of Babar Awan from his post as federal minister for law and parliamentary affairs, to plead the reference case of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in the Supreme Court of Pakistan has raised many serious questions.

The elected PPP government should take this case seriously and there was no need to dramatise or draw political mileage from this case at all. Since the judiciary is already independent, not properly pleading the case will prove fatal.

I suggest that President Asif Ali Zardari ask Babar Awan to take his resignation back and, instead, a panel made up of distinguished lawyers must be formed to plead the case. The lawyers on this panel must be chosen purely on merit, irrespective of their affiliation’s with political parties.
