Surprisingly, Pakistan banned triple talaq way back in 1961
KARACHI: Recently, the Indian Supreme Court banned triple talaq deeming it against the constitution, rights and dignity of women and in contradiction with Islamic teachings. Surprisingly, Pakistan banned triple talaq way back in 1961.
Triple talaq by definition and implication is the act of divorcing your wife verbally by pronouncing talaq thrice. It deprives women of their right to have control and agency over their own life. Ironically, like other various laws being into effect but far from implementation, triple talaq too is still common in Pakistan. Patriarchy still regards it a man’s right to divorce a woman, conveniently and instantly. In fact, TV dramas have openly propagated the same in Pakistan for a very long time.
Similarly, many at the time of marriage chalk out the clause — figuratively and literally — pertaining to a woman’s right to divorce her husband. Both are still widely in practice in the country and undermine women’s right to take informed decisions about their own marriages.
