What happened on March 23?

Letter April 12, 2011

KARACHI: This is with reference to Sarwar Bari’s article of April 12 titled “What happened on March 23?”

The point I would like to make is that even most of our educated people don’t know what exactly on that day. For instance, it was on that day, in 1956, that Pakistan got its first Constitution and was proclaimed a republic. The day was celebrated as Republic Day until 1958, when President Ayub Khan abrogated the Constitution. The next year it was renamed as Pakistan Resolution Day and celebrated accordingly by the Ayub regime. It may be mentioned that the actual Pakistan Resolution was passed on March 24, 1940, not March 23.
