Keepers of peace in the world

Letter August 08, 2017
Since its inception, 71 operations have been initiated by the UN’s several agencies

SHIKARPUR: The world was plunged into chaos during the First World War and Second World War. It took years for the world to come out of the destructive shadow of these two wars.

These despicable wars, fought amongst some of the world’s most powerful nations, brought grave social, economic and environmental consequences for the world. Finally after such prolonged, venomous and lethal conflicts, the United Nations was established to prevent wars and conflicts. Since its inception, 71 operations have been initiated by the UN’s several agencies, including a peacekeeping plan.

However, the peacekeeping organisation consists of military personnel and strategists as well as civilians. There are currently 9,787 civilian policemen, 1,821 UN military personnel, 82,580 troops, 4,787 international and 974 local civilians and 1,470 UN volunteers. These brave male and female security officers are working hard to maintain peace in the world at great personal risk.

Pakistan is the third-largest contributor to the UN peacekeeping mission with 7.28 per cent of the total peacekeeping force. But despite this, the international media is time and again highlighting Pakistan’s inappropriate posture in this regard. Nevertheless, the role of the UN peacekeeping force has been noteworthy in securing the world from the appalling and horror consequences of wars and conflicts.
