KARACHI: This is with reference to several reports in this newspaper on exhibitions and sales of lawns by various designers, in recent weeks. To this effect, the whole of Karachi seems awash with billboards depicting attractive women wearing the lawns on offer. I must further admit that several of these advertising hoardings are massive and one cannot avoid looking at them even in the midst of heavy traffic. In fact, I have heard from some people in my workplace that they have been in accidents because of this, since some motorists presumably are distracted and hence cannot concentrate on their driving. I guess this is part of the fallout that we must endure as a consequence of being a consumerist economy.
Of course, there are some who think that such advertising portrays women negatively as sex objects and that their sexuality is used to sell a particular product. My reply to them is, what is so wrong about this? It’s not as if a woman is being forced into prostitution and many of our models are respectable role models for the younger generation.
