Pakistan does not benefit from that respite because the lawn wars result in spiraling temperatures
KARACHI: As I exited the Jinnah International Airport I was welcomed by a familiar yet forgotten gust of humid and hot air. Sitting in my cab, I looked out of the window for other familiar sights. I was amazed and confused by the number of lawn advertisements I encountered on the 30-minute ride home.
Everywhere else winter is followed by spring and pleasant breeze before the summer. Pakistan does not benefit from that respite because the lawn wars result in spiraling temperatures. The simple three-piece fabric creates frenzy in the country. On the one side brands are accused of advertising fallacious discounts and on the other, women suffer stampedes at outlets to tell about the designer wear they bought.
Lawn used to be an informal fabric that women wore at home. I fail to understand how any cut, embellishment or brand can turn it into a trend setter. For a population that can barely eke out an existence, it is irrational to spend on original, replicas and designer lawns that are a ticket to lawn wars.
