But seems like that’s too much to ask for
KARACHI: Rainfall in Karachi is rare but when it does occur, it brings a number of challenges with it. From electricity outages to traffic jams, caused by a lack of a proper drainage system on the roads, rainfalls are more bothersome than relaxing. And on top of that, hours following the heavy downpour see a lot of pests hovering in our houses and streets.
These mosquitoes and flies not only make our lives miserable but also infect us with viruses such as dengue, chikungunya or malaria. And there is very little we can do to counter this, while the provincial government sits in the comforts of their air-conditioned halls. For our homes and, perhaps, offices, we use a number of pesticides to keep us safe. But despite that in no time there are more pests invading our homes. And they come from our streets which are left dirty after the rainfall.
Just like all other problems, fumigation too has been ignored by the incumbent government. Ideally, it’s the responsibility of the government or the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation to fumigate the streets every day, irrespective of whether there is rain or not. But seems like that’s too much to ask for, hence, the least they can do is fumigate the streets after a rainfall.
