India’s dying secularism

Letter July 11, 2017
Banning the slaughter of cow and forcible conversion of Muslims and Christians into Hindus are acts of human violation

SHIKARPUR: Since its inception, India has been a secular state. But, recent years prove to be a flagrant violation of its own status. Banning the slaughter of cow and forcible conversion of Muslims and Christians into Hindus are some of the most disastrous acts of human violation. Politically, Narendra Modi’s BJP party has tremendous hold on four major states including Uttarakhand, Manipur, Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Goa. Currently, India is called Modi’s nation and a big chunk of the population is supporting this very agenda. Besides, appointing Yogi Adityanath as Chief Minister of UP is considered an absolute crisis for secularism since most of Yogi’s policies are quite against Muslims or the non-Hindu population. Hence, India has been rapidly leading towards fascism and Hindutva.

Modi’s regime has converted India’s historic secularism into Hindutva, a fascist ideology. In Hindutva, Muslims are banned from the slaughter of cows, whereas Christians are forced to change their religion to Hinduism. The policies of Yogi also resemble the footprints of Modi. By and large, such policies of autocracy and dictatorship show how brutal and violent Modi’s government has become. These policies create unrest, chaos and disturbance. Moreover, adopting fascism in a secular state is a slap on the ruling BJP in particular, and the public in general.
