We will not leave you behind

Letter July 10, 2017
Pakistan was built to provide a safe haven for religious minority

KARACHI: This is in response to Sarwar Bari’s article titled ‘I am left behind’ published on July 6th in this paper. Through this letter, I would want to apologise to Mr Bari for the neglect he has been facing in a country that is equally his and his family.

Just as he mentions, generalisation has been the norm in Pakistan, which has left many citizens deprived of their rights. In a country, which was built to provide a safe haven for a religious minority in the Indian subcontinent, 70 years later if you are not part of the majority, you will be left behind.

Mr Bari, your identity may not be included in the ongoing census, but irrespective of what our leadership and the state propagate, your identity is as intertwined with Pakistan as is ours — the privileged majority.
