Myth and reality

Letter June 20, 2017
If Imran’s focus is no more on changing the existing system, it’s time we accepted

ISLAMABAD: In 2011, discussions revolved around the emerging Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and its resemblance to the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid. All the electable candidates of the PML-Q were keen on joining the Imran Khan-led PTI. Soon the gas was out of the balloon and the PTI could hardly win 30 National Assembly seats.

Calling the existing breed of politicians corrupt and cause of all problems, the PTI came with the slogan of ‘tabdeeli’. Idealism swept out and was followed by pragmatism. Billionaires joined the PTI and the line between corrupt and honest became blurred. All the charged corrupt leaders of the Pakistan Peoples Party’s tenure are joining them. The argument given by the PTI that it’s only the top leader who matters to bring a change doesn’t sell to people.

Contempt case: Imran again fails to submit reply

Imran’s focus should be somewhere else. The core constituency politics needs to be addressed. The existing voting process needs to be revamped. The knowledge base of voters needs to be improved. Running a rat race and expecting to beat the old traditional politicians won’t do any good.

If Imran’s focus is no more on changing the existing system, it’s time we accepted and started taking him as an existing political player and not the holy cow. No high moral grounds for the PTI chief, rather a power hungry move-maker who in his late sixties wants to climb the top post under the mask of a social and sports legend.
