Safeguarding Sino-Pak friendship

Letter June 12, 2017
It is the need of the hour to provide a safe and conducive environment for our friends from China

ISLAMABAD: The news of two Chinese nationals’ abduction in Quetta, followed by their killing allegedly by Islamic State militants is a huge cause of concern. At a time when Sino-Pak relations are flourishing with the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) in the forefront, resulting in an influx of Chinese nationals entering Pakistan, such an incident can hinder the collective goals of the two nations.

What is more worrisome is the fact that the incident took place in Quetta, a city where there is a heavy presence of security officials. Although security measures have been beefed up following the incident and at least 11 Chinese citizens living in the vicinity have been relocated to Karachi, a lot more had to be done.

If the IS claim is proven right, it can spread fear amongst other Chinese nationals who are planning to visit Pakistan in the future. The Chinese have a significant expat population in Pakistan. According to reports, there were 8,112 Chinese workers in 2015 and post-CPEC 7,000 more Chinese professionals are expected to join.

The abduction of the two teachers had already sparked anger on Chinese social media with some strong and harsh anti-Muslim comments.

To be able to enjoy the fruits of CPEC and maintain a cordial relationship with our neighbour, it is the need of the hour to provide a safe and conducive environment for our friends from China.
