Progress through the mind

Studies have shown that listening to structurally complex music enhances mental ability

ISLAMABAD: This refers to Amin Jan Naim’s column, ‘Enhancing the Pakistani mind’, published on May 26th. I admire Mr Naim’s broad exposure to languages and their culture. I also admire his continuing interest to spread his ideas and abiding interest in improvement in Pakistani society and polity.

I agree exposure to great ideas and music contributes to our minds’ development and enlightenment. Although not as good a student as he is of Western music, I also love Beethoven more than any other master. My favourites are Eroica, the 9th and the Moonlight Sonata. I will now have to look for the sonata he mentioned in his column. Studies have shown that listening to structurally complex music enhances mental ability. It, of course, calms the mind, which itself allows the mind to work much better. To echo his profound thoughts, I am adapting the first line of Unesco’s charter: “Since progress starts in the minds of men/women, it is in the minds of men/women that foundations of progress must be constructed.”
