The pillars of our culture have been reduced to extreme greed, visceral violence and ingrained sectarianism
ISLAMABAD: This is in reference to Amin Jan Naim’s column titled ‘Enhancing the Pakistani mind’ that appeared in this publication on May 26th. Thank you so much for your views on the subject of enhancing the Pakistani mind through Plato and Beethoven whom you use as intellectually profound symbols for excellence. You have been very consistent in seeing these two great achievers as lighthouses for humanity. But what moved me greatly was your dedication towards major languages, from Greek to German and Chinese to English. People with such devotion and dedication to matters of the intellect are not easy to come by in the world. The pillars of our own culture have been reduced to a troika: extreme greed, visceral violence and ingrained sectarianism. Your mind-enhancing prescription may, therefore, not be taken up that seamlessly by our elite in whom you have pinned your faith. But hope is important and I join you in hoping that change will come through the inspirational figures of history. Thank you again for your consistent and powerful ideas.
