Strike by doctors

Letter April 03, 2011
Hats off to the civil society which usually leaves no stone unturned.

FATEH JANG: It was good to see our prime minister taking time out to go to India to watch the Pakistan-India semi-final match at Mohali on March 30.

However, I wish he could spare some time also to visit any government hospital in Punjab and see what the doctors’ strike is doing to the lives of patients. There are some media reports which say that some patients have died because they couldn’t be provided medical treatment because of the strike.

I consider the federal government as well as the Punjab government equally responsible for this negligence. The issue must be sorted out immediately so that the strike can end. More lives could be lost if this is not done, and the initiative needs to be taken up by the provincial government.

Hats off to the civil society which usually leaves no stone unturned if it’s a matter of gender or the chief justice, but does nothing if poor Pakistanis are dying because doctors feel the need to go on strike and the government isn’t bothered about the impact that will have on ordinary citizens.
