No VCs in K-P universities

Letter May 11, 2017
Currently, almost 11 K-P universities are without vice-chancellors and left at the mercy of acting VCs

After Mashal Khan’s incident at Mardan University, it is a matter of urgency and importance to bring the issue to public notice. Most of the K-P universities are employed with inefficient and ineligible staff. Despite PTI’s efforts, we are still suffering from political interference. From grade four employees to the vice-chancellor, you will need political reference to get a job.

Such politicised faculty and administration uses various student groups for achievement of their nefarious designs. There is no mechanism for the verification of the degrees and experience certificates of the recruited staff.

Currently, almost 11 K-P universities are without vice-chancellors and left at the mercy of acting VCs, swallowing the money without paying any attention towards the academic activities.

For example, Bannu University’s acting vice-chancellor has four designations: acting registrar, acting vice chancellor, permanent dean of the university and chairman of the botany department. The crucial administrative posts have been deliberately given to those faculty members who have either strong political support or are active members of the teaching faculty association.

The post of deputy registrar has been given on dual charge basis to an MA Islamiyat. How is it possible for him to manage the seat? His only credibility is that he was the president of the teaching staff association in the previous year and has close links with the JUI party. On the other hand, the post of additional registrar has been given to a person on dual charge basis who has no degree.

The model Act devised for managing the administrative dealings of university says that a teacher can’t be given an administrative post on dual charge basis for more than three months. But unfortunately our acting VC himself violates the Act, because in Pakistan there is no mechanism for accountability.
