Match day (II)

Letter March 29, 2011
The Pakistan team has performed well in the World Cup so far, but clearly its biggest test will come today.

KARACHI: The Pakistan team has performed well in the World Cup so far, but clearly its biggest test will come today in the semi-final match against India in Mohali. In that context, one cannot understand the interior minister’s remarks that the team should not get involved in match-fixing of any kind. There was no reason to say that because, so far, the team has been playing well and there is no proof to suggest that it was involved in match-fixing. The only thing that Rehman Malik’s comments would do is to place undue pressure on Afridi and his men — and that would benefit India. I would advise the interior minister that if he so wishes, he should use his energies directing Wapda and KESC to spare the country of loadshedding on match day.
