Rural areas witness eight hours of power cuts, while urban areas experience four to six hours
RAWALPINDI: In summer the shortage of electricity is estimated at around 45pc. The average electricity source is around 1,570MW while the expected source is between 2,900MW and 3,200MW. One of the major reasons for the shortfall is the low level of water in dams, bringing electricity production to independent power producers and thermal power plants. Rural areas witness eight hours of power cuts, while urban areas experience four to six hours.
Recently, massive power cuts were reported from different cities of Pakistan, including Rawalpindi, Lahore and Kasur. People from the other cities also claim that they face a host of problems due to electricity shortage. The government has been making efforts to control it and have urged the masses to judiciously use electricity. Although it has promised to improve the situation and limit power cuts to three to four hours in urban areas and five hours in rural areas, the power shortage will remain unchanged unless hydropower production is improved.
