Curbing food wastage

Letter April 18, 2017
Food wastage also results in affecting our economy

KARACHI: Through this column, I would like to urge readers to respect food and stop wasting it. There are people in the world who can’t afford two square meals a day and sleep on an empty stomach. About one-third of the food produced for human consumption globally is wasted. This is about 1.3 billion tons of food each year and around 952 million people are suffering from hunger. We should think of them and change our habit of wasting food. Buy what we need, cook what we want to consume and fill our plates with food we know we will finish. When eating out, we shouldn’t hesitate in getting our leftovers packed and either bring it home or give it to the poor.

Remember throwing food away is like stealing from the table of the poor and hungry. Let’s ensure that food reaches the needy instead of a pit. Food wastage not only affects the environment but also impacts the economy as we are not only wasting food but also the resources, like energy and water that were used to prepare it. Every time the food is wasted, all the resources that went into producing, processing, packing and transporting the food are also wasted. About 40pc food is wasted at parties in Pakistan. Considering that Pakistan is an agriculture-based country, food wastage also results in affecting our economy.
