Lack of democracy in Pakistan

Letter April 05, 2017
There should also be equality, justice and rule of law across the country

LAKKI MARWAT: Democracy is considered the best form of government. In a democracy, citizens have the right to select government according to their own wishes through votes. States that are functional democracies are completely stable politically, economically and as well as socially. But too often in our country democracy has been derailed again and again. There are many reasons of course such as bad governance, illiteracy, lack of democratic norms and so on and so forth.

Illiteracy acts as one of the major barriers. The masses tend to pick shaky, venal and inconsistent leaders. I believe education the basic precondition for a democratic society. So it is necessary that for a meaningful democracy, the people of Pakistan must be able to read and write.

Then there is lack of honest leadership. Politicians always look after their own personal interest in order to aggrandise themselves. Instead of national interest, they aim to serve their petty interests.

There should also be equality, justice and rule of law across the country. Irrespective of their colour, creed and level of wealth, all citizens should be considered equal as well as accountable for their deeds. Youth must be promoted in every sphere of life.
