It is a painful reality that successive governments in the past did nothing for the livestock development
ISLAMABAD: Undeniably, the province of Sindh used to have the largest livestock population not only in the country but also in the entire South Asian region. But all this has changed. The population of sheep, goats and other cattle are now in decline because fodder and potable are unavailable. This is one of the gravest problems they face these days.
It is a painful reality that successive governments in the past did nothing for the livestock development. In the wake of dramatically changing climate whose effects and side effects are being felt in the province nowadays, the provincial rulers are requested to build climate change resilience for the livestock and launch a four-pronged pragmatic livestock development programme based on cattle development, bovine-, sheep and goat development as well as poultry development.
Above all, agricultural science and veterinary graduates, among others, should be hired or given soft loans to launch their own eco-enterprises with a special focus on promotion of dairy production and also desi murghi (country chicken), instead of broiler chicken which contains arsenic-like hazardous chemical elements which cause cancer and other diseases in the province.
