Neglected Lahore

Letter March 22, 2011
What the city needs to solve is its traffic mess and public transport system.

LAHORE: Ahmad Rafay Alam’s article of March 21 titled “The hidden cost of infrastructure development” is a gem. The moment one leaves Lahore, it is depressing to see people living in extreme filth without access to clean drinking water, adequate healthcare and so on. And despite this, the provincial government is spending hundreds of millions of rupees on an overpass that will serve mostly the well-heeled.

The numbers and information given in the article should open the eyes of citizens to the fact that Lahore, despite its much-hyped development, is a much neglected city and that underpasses are not the answer. What the city needs to solve is its traffic mess and public transport system. It also shows the kind of priorities that we have in terms of development and resolving our civic issues.
