ISLAMABAD: May I ask what is the point of protesting against the release of Raymond Davis? Surely that will not bring him back to Pakistan or ensure that he is tried for all the things that many Pakistanis want him to be tried for — such as espionage. There is confusion over who actually paid the blood money — the Americans say they didn’t, one news report said that the Saudis did but they have denied any involvement. The other point is that why was this done so hurriedly and where are the heirs?
The irony is that, according to several news reports, a dear, brotherly country made a crucial intervention and got the matter resolved which eventually allowed Davis to be released and depart for America.
Let’s not fool ourselves. We have seen in our own history murderers of prime ministers never get caught for their crimes, or perhaps their identities are known but no one dares to catch them and hold them accountable. If that has been the case with such powerful people’s murderers, what could we have possible expected in the case of two ordinary Pakistanis?
Also, how convenient that both the Sharif brothers were not in Pakistan when all this happened.
