Government hospitals: same story

Letter March 03, 2017
Most of the money allotted to hospitals goes into the pockets of officials as there is wide-scale corruption.

KARACHI: Difficulties faced by patients at government hospitals range from unavailability of facilities to negligence on the part of staff. Patients need proper treatment and care. Officials of these hospitals say that they do not get funds from the government. Hygiene is another area in which most government hospitals lack, where even the patients’ wards are in the same condition as the lavatory area of the hospital. However, there is allegedly large scale embezzlement and fraud in these hospitals. Officials do not spend all the money on hospitals. Instead, a very small proportion of the money is spent on hospitals. Most of the money allotted to these hospitals goes into the pockets of officials as there is wide-scale corruption in our country with no checks and balances nor accountability. The government must take measures to ensure that hospitals not only provide cost-effective treatment but also provide better care and facilities to patients.
