K-P religious affairs and Ulema Board

Letter February 11, 2017
Students of all faiths should be taught ethics

ISLAMABAD: This refers to the news item, “Ulema Board to advise K-P on religious affairs” (February 8). Minister of Elementary and Secondary Education Muhammad Atif Khan said that ethics would only be taught to students belonging to minorities. All students, including those belonging to the Islamic faith, should be taught ethics along with their Islamic teachings. With a few exceptions, students are not oriented in schools towards civic sense, such as following queues in public places, disposing of garbage in dustbins, and avoiding obscene language. Religious teachings should be supplemented with character building, etiquette, manners, and civic sense. The teaching of ethics broadens the moral compass of individuals and instills a deeper understanding of religious scruples.
