Security lapses at universities

Letter February 08, 2017
This security lapse may become the cause of another unwanted incident

ISLAMABAD: Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU) is ranked among the top universities of Pakistan. The university area is about 1,100 acres which is quite vast. After the attacks on educational institutions, the government emphasised robust security at educational institutions. It is unfortunate that QAU still does not have a complete boundary and an adequate security system. The whole area is open for everyone. Security guards never inquire about people’s identities at the gate. In the daytime and especially at night, drug addicts and strangers are found wandering on the premises of hostels and departments. The area from Shadra, which leads to hostels, is without any security guards. In several articles and news reports, the media has tried to draw the attention of the university faculty and the federal government but they have turned a deaf ear to them. The lack of an appropriate boundary is one cause for encroachment on the university land. The attacks on Army Public School Peshawar and Bacha Khan University are glaring examples of the recklessness that negative elements can cause in combination with our universities’ neglect to establish appropriate security measures. In our country, we usually only realise our negligence after an unwanted incident. This security lapse may become the cause of another unwanted incident, creating a dire need for attention.
