Security tensions means upgrading nuclear arsenals helps Pakistan maintain the balance of power in South Asia
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan recently conducted a successful test of the Ababeel surface-to-surface ballistic missile. Ababeel has a maximum range of 2,200 kilometres and is capable of delivering multiples warheads using multiple independent re-entry vehicle technology. Since there are always security tensions between Pakistan and India, the upgrading of our nuclear arsenals is the only way for us to maintain the balance of power in South Asia and counter the United States’ and India’s growing strategic partnership. It is important for Pakistan to be able to hold its own when it comes to defence, rather than relying on other nations, whose friendships have come and gone in the past. The successful test of Ababeel is a great achievement by Pakistan. It should continue its research and development work and ensure adequate safety for its citizens through its defence programme.
