PPP strike in Karachi

Letter March 11, 2011
That the ruling party should call for a strike in a city almost permanently on strike is the height of callousness.

KARACHI: The adage ‘those whom the gods wish to destroy, they first make mad’ has increasingly been recognised as a painful truism for Pakistan. That the ruling party should call for a strike in a city almost permanently on strike is the height of callousness. That the party that regularly shows only its dynastic and autocratic credentials would cut its own nose ostensibly to take ‘revenge’ against the judiciary just shows how committed the party is to rule of law. And that Taj Haider, one of the few remaining intelligent, genuine and concerned stalwarts left in the circus that is now the PPP, should have announced this decision is even more unfortunate. Mr Haider has played perfectly into the hands of the PPP’s detractors.
