KARACHI: This is with reference to an article in The Express Tribune Magazine titled “10 things I hate about women” by Amna Iqbal. The writer, in an attempt to be amusing, ended up derailing the entire theme of the magazine, which was to promote women’s rights and female empowerment. Not only did she fail to be humourous, but she also came off as misogynistic and offensive. Her piece was far from satire and simply cannot be defended on that basis. Her description of women was stereotypical, and the whole thing reeks of a desperate attempt to be ‘edgy’, a good example being the PMS reference.
Overall, the 10 things section has deteriorated in quality. What used to be funny and honest satire has now become a forum for writers to express their personal bias, all under the name of humour. With a few rare exceptions, most pieces under this section are simply rude, offensive, and far from funny.
