Helping bar associations

Letter March 09, 2011
Many members of bar councils and associations are tax evaders.

ISLAMABAD: This refers to the report of March 9 titled “Bill drawn up to make grants mandatory” wherein it is stated that the government is introducing a bill in parliament to amend the Legal Practitioners and Bar Council Act, 1973, with a view to provide for mandatory grants to bar councils and bar associations.

I am afraid such a move will not justify diversion of law-abiding taxpayers’ money to those bar councils and associations many of whose members are tax evaders and do not maintain the records prescribed under Rule 28 of the Income Tax Rules, 2002, which should reflect actual receipts from their clients and legitimate tax payable thereon.
