Welcome General Qamar Javed Bajwa

Letter December 16, 2016
CPEC is another important ground area for the new COAS

KARACHI: The transfer of the baton has finally taken place. General Raheel Sharif deserves great applause for fulfilling his commitment of transferring power in due time. This has not only strengthened the democratic set-up of the country but has also set an example for other COAS to follow the same path. However, dealing with Pakistan’s current issues is indeed a daunting task. Dealing with the hostile neighbour, carrying out Zarb-e-Azb, and monitoring the Karachi operation will certainly require tough mettle.

General Qamar Bajwa’s background promises further improvement in the law and order situation but he will also have to deal with other foreign policy matters. With the election-win of Donald Trump, the dimension of US-Pakistan relations has completely changed. Being one of the most important strategic partners, Pakistan will have to cope with the emerging misunderstanding between the two countries. CPEC is another important ground area for the new COAS. The military must ensure secure environment to the trade convoys so that smooth flow of trade could be carried out. Furthermore, the ever-increasing interference of India in Balochistan will have to be curtailed on an immediate basis. Dealing effectively with internal as well as external matters is the only key to bringing out Pakistan from the whirlpool of dismal plight.
