Why do we import coal?

Letter December 12, 2016
This coal can produce electricity in copious amounts

GUJRANWALA: Power outages are a continuous topic across cities in Pakistan, whether due to loadshedding or shoddy design. However, the people of Pakistan are oblivious of some of the precious resources that can eliminate the electricity crisis from our nation. It is estimated that Pakistan has 7,508 million tonnes of coal present in lower Sindh and in the Salt Ranges. Instead of this, the country is importing coal from other countries, which increases the burden on the economy of Pakistan and decreases the balance of payment. Why is our government overlooking this sought-after resource? This coal can produce electricity in copious amounts and we will no longer be under the command of other countries.
