Illuminating the streets

Letter December 05, 2016
With the beginning of the Islamic month of Rabiul Awwal starts the illumination of every nook and corner of Karachi

KARACHI: With the beginning of the Islamic month of Rabiul Awwal starts the illumination of every nook and corner of Karachi. These illuminations, which start on the first day of the Islamic month, last for 10 days or even more in many areas. I often wonder how many people honestly approach Karachi Electric (KE) and officially apply for temporary connections for these illuminations and pay electricity charges after 10 days.

How can a country like ours, which faces electricity load-shedding for two to 16 and even 18 hours a day, afford to use thousands of megawatts of electricity only to illuminate the streets? The month is indeed a time of happiness and honour for the majority in this country but there needs to be some rationale for the excessive electricity usage, or even theft in some cases. It is high time that KE should send its teams to check how many areas have been illuminated unlawfully through the ‘kunda’ system and take action against those involved.
