The PPP should be accountable for monitoring development projects
HYDERABAD: The Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) made a commitment to the people of Sindh about roti, kapra and makaan but this has become a distant dream for the rural dwellers of the province. The PPP failed to eliminate poverty and unemployment and did not deliver on other bases of prosperity. A report by the Ministry of Planning, Development and Reform stated that the poverty rate in Sindh is 43 per cent.
Corruption in Sindh is the main hurdle in development and eradicating poverty in rural areas. Whenever corruption has strong roots, it promotes poverty and hunger. The PPP programmes, including the Benazir Income Support Programme, are only politicised and do not prioritise poor women in rural areas. The PPP should respond to the legacy of Bhutto with compliance towards the promise made to the Sindhi people. The resources of Sindh should be utilised for the development and empowerment of the rural people. They should have access to safe water, food and security in Sindh. The PPP should be accountable for monitoring development projects and take serious action to eradicate the poverty in the province.
