Pakistan has been a trustworthy and sincere ally of US
LAHORE: The unexpected victory of Mr Donald Trump has left many in a state of shock. His tweets were viewed by a vast number of Pakistanis as warnings of bad times to come but such apprehensions carry no weight. The US President elect will definitely follow the path best suited for his country, and before making any final decision with regards to Muslims or illegal immigrants, he will consider all pros and cons of such a move.
In the case of Pakistan, Mr Trump’s tilt towards our country will be quite natural as there are many similarities between him and Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif. Both are very successful businessmen. Both started their political careers by defeating women hailing from political families with ample experience of political manoeuvring, both were inexperienced in the political field before reaching the highest office, both are inclined towards establishing good working relations with their arch-enemies Russia and India, respectively, and Mr Trump’s pro-India rhetoric was by no means taken as anti-Pakistan. Both men won the elections by inciting and raising the issue of nationalism and received votes based on their nationalistic approach.
PM Sharif immediately congratulated Mr Trump on his historical win with a strong facilitation message that will have a lasting impression on the president elect of the US, who will feel quite comfortable working with him after January 20, 2017. The US Consul General in Karachi assured Pakistanis that the US’ “foreign policy is based on national interests and they do not change when the government changes.” Mr Trump will definitely, categorically and specifically follow the traditions of his great country, the USA, as he has indicted in his post-election speeches and interviews. Pakistanis living anywhere in the world need not to worry; PM Sharif and Mr Trump are going to be good friends working for the best interests of their respective countries. Pakistan has been a trustworthy and sincere ally of US and shall remain so under the dynamic and able leaderships of Nawaz and Trump.
